Research areas

The field of political economy provides key analytical tools for understanding a range of fundamental issues in our societies, such as the regulation of globalised economic systems, financial crises, inequalities and tensions between capitalism, ecology and democracy. The diversity of research topics and the theoretical and methodological pluralism of this disciplinary field enable constant dialogue with other fields of political science and other social science disciplines (economics, geography, sociology, anthropology, etc.). In Belgium, a group of researchers are developing various research projects in political economy.

The members of the Political Economy Working Group are working on a wide range of topics, including: the political economy of the Green transition; the political economy of central banks and financialisation; the role of the state in the economy; the circulation of ideas and expertise, across international and domestic political arenas; neoliberalism and neoliberalisation; the political economy of the European Union; the political economy of development and globalisation; etc.

The group organises regular workshops and promotes the visibility of political economy research in Belgium.

The Belgian Political Economy Working Group is institutionalised through a “Working Group” of the Association Belge Francophone de Science Politique (ABSP). The coordinators are Tom Duterme, Zoé Evrard, Ariane Gemander and Tiago Moreira Ramalho.

It is also a “Groupe de Contact” of the FNRS. The president of the contact group is Clément Fontan and the secretary is Ariane Gemander.
